Another historic moment for Gifted Students of Connecticut!

CAG is excited to announce that Governor Lamont signed HB 7353, An Act Concerning The Provision of Special Education, into law, which will be known as PA 19-184. It is the second gifted-focused law in three years, which CAG inspired and helped bring to a successful passage. The first law PA 17-82 has now been in force for two school years.

The new law requires schools to inform parents about not only the results of a student's gifted-identification process, but also an explanation of how the student was identified. Since students are rarely gifted in all areas, it is important for both parents and teachers to understand whether the child is gifted in math, language, science etc. or talented in art or music. The mandated identification-notification correspondence must also include contact information for staff in charge of services at the school or district level, as well as reference information on CT's organizations supporting gifted education (like CAG). The new process, under the new law required for the 2019/2020 school year, will enable parents and educators to better support our gifted students.
Over the coming months, CAG will be working with CT State Department of Education Gifted Representative, Dr. Dori Papa-Santini to further define best practices and guidelines in support of the new law.

As always, we are thankful for your support as we work to meet the needs of Connecticut's gifted, talented and high-potential children. We welcome your thoughts and suggestions as we move into this new phase of gifted education in the state of Connecticut.
